About our school

Royal North Shore Hospital School is a School for Specific Purposes (SSP) supporting students who are receiving medical care within Royal North Shore Hospital, as well as school-aged students of siblings receiving care. In collaboration with the NSW Health community, we provide a safe, calm, and inclusive learning environment where every student is recognised, supported, and encouraged to engage meaningfully in their learning.

All students at RNSH School receive personalised learning that is tailored to their individual needs. This includes explicit teaching strategies that align with each student’s capabilities and are directly linked to learning outcomes.

We work in close partnership with families, carers, hospital staff, and census schools to create learning opportunities ensuring that each student can learn in ways that suit their medical, emotional, and educational needs.

Our curriculum planning is flexible and responsive, allowing us to maintain continuity with classroom learning while adapting to each student’s circumstances. Learning may occur at the bedside, in the classroom, online, on the ward, or in shared hospital spaces. Teachers tailor the time spent with each student to ensure purposeful engagement and support positive transitions back to school or into other settings.

Our staff are caring, skilled, and deeply committed to helping students feel confident, connected, and supported throughout their time with us.

Alongside curriculum learning, we also offer engaging programs through speciailised contracted professionals as well as other schools within our community:

Many students find these programs highly enjoyable and motivating during their hospital stay.

Our vision is to provide high-quality, compassionate education that supports student wellbeing, maintains continuity of learning, and ensures every student is empowered to achieve their potential - no matter the circumstances.
